Renovation Blitz

June 19, 2007
Today Tracy Moore told me I wore the wrong shoes for the Breakfast Television/Home Depot 48 Hours Renovation Blitz.  At least I didn't have to go on the roof!  We travelled to Ajax to begin the renovation on Rob and Maria's backyard. The home owners were so excited that their house was chosen for the big Reno job that they told everyone in the neighborhood.  They mentioned it to their local Cupcake Bakery FROSTINES and they gave them cupcakes for us to eat this morning.  The folks from Home Depot are not only going to turn Rob and Maria's small patch of grass into an oasis, they are also going to turn it solar. Solar panels on the roof will help heat their hot water and cut their electricity costs. This time they will do it in 48 hours instead of 24, giving themselves a little more time for a bigger effect. Can't wait until Thursday for the Big reveal!

See you then

Frostines

April 29, 2007

As Durham Region continues to grow at a mind-numbing pace, we are

continuing to see new businesses created that aim to cater at the mostly “Urban”

crowd that have left Toronto to call Durham home. In many major North

American cities there has been a new influx of decadent bake shops that

produce gourmet cupcakes. These shops create products made of the highest

quality ingredients and make no apologies for the fact that these are meant to be

an indulgence when you feel you need to reward yourself. As of late 2006, you

can now add Ajax to the list of places with a gourmet cupcake store of their own

with the opening of Frostines.

Located at 235 Bayly Street West, at Monarch you will find Frostines and co-

owners Patrick and Alice Choo-See-Nam. When I first walked in recently I was

immediately struck by the bright and upscale décor as well as the unbelievably

incredible aroma of fresh baked goods. Upon further inspection I found a menu

that showcased over 20 varieties of cupcakes ranging from German Chocolate to

Creamy Banana, Red Velvet, Pineapple Ginger and others. In addition to that

Alice is a purveyor and maker of decadent chocolate truffles and other baked

goods like cakes, pies, cookies and muffins.

It’s important to note that Frostines is also a nut-free facility. Their products are

also free of Trans Fats. Patrick and Alice have also created some unique aspects

to their business in that they are fully prepared to cater events such as kid’s

parties as well as business and corporate events. It even notes on their website

that they will offer free local delivery on orders of $20 or more. Despite the

inherent challenges of opening a new business and a new concept to the area,

Patrick and Alice tell me that this is a labour of love and that they are committed

to bringing the best cupcakes and baked goods to Durham Region.

When you visit you will need to remember that you are going to pay a little more

for their products, but when you put the best ingredients into what you make

and you make everything from scratch, the product is well worth the price. That

being said, I still found their prices to be quite reasonable and believed that

there was significant value to what you found there.

With Mother’s Day approaching Frostines is offering a special package of 6 “I

Love You Mom” cupcakes that are fully gift-wrapped with a pink satin ribbon

and a personalized message for only $16.99. Alice also mentioned to me that if

you pay a visit and mention you heard about them on The Novak Report she will

gladly let you sample one of her cupcakes for free.

I think if you take the time to visit Frostines you will be pleasantly surprised and

impressed by the quality of their products and you might wonder why Durham

hasn’t seen a facility like this before. You can learn more about Frostines by

calling 905-686-9811.

This report will also appear on my website at modernmediaperspectives.com.

And on the hunt for the real hidden treasures of Durham Region, I’m Eric Novak.

Frostines Inc. Celebrated the Grand Opening of the store on Saturday, May 12, 2007 in attendance was the Mayor of Ajax, Steve Parish, Member of Council Joanne Dies, Eric Novak Founder of (Small Business Big Ideas, The Novak Report and other media programs) along with our family and friends.
